scsi scanner - program won't find it

Hey folks - I have some work coming up that my scanner is really needed - it works
OK in suse, but since slack is my main OS, I'm trying to set it up - and I'm lost
on step one.

background -
I have a adaptec aic-78xx card with 2 hard drives connected & mounted. I know
all my scsi stuff is OK. When I type "cdrecord -scanbus" I get:

scsibus1:
1,0,0 100) 'SEAGATE ' 'ST39173N ' '5764' Disk
1,1,0 101) 'SEAGATE ' 'ST39173N ' '5764' Disk
1,2,0 102) 'HP ' 'C2520A ' '3644' Processor

A- So it is detected on the bus.
B- I am trying to use Kooka, but it only detects my tv card (wha???).
C- same result with xsane - wants to use my tv card
D- The scanner is not listed in "lsmod" - shouldn't it be in there?

I have looked around here at LQ and on the web, and have found minimal results
for scsi scanners - it seems I am behind the times by not getting a USB scanner
yet. But my old HP 6100C does such a great job - I don't want to replace it.

Anyone have an idea on the direction I should go in?
thanks in advance -tw

Try: sane-find-scanner and see what it outputs

And: man sane-hp talks about hp scanners backend (there's a special option there that might help you)

OK - got that far.

By typing "sane-find-scanner", I got this:

found SCSI processor "HP C2520A 3644" at /dev/sg3
found SCSI processor "HP C2520A 3644" at /dev/sgd

It suggested I read the manpages and type scanimage -L

scanimage -L got me this:
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname bttv video virtual device
device `hp:/dev/sg3' is a Hewlett-Packard C2520A flatbed scanner

So apparetnly I need to get the gui programs to recognize /dev/sg3

on to readin the manpage and figuring that part out. Thanks for your help,
and any additional head start would be great , thanks again. - tw

UPDATE: (instead of a replay)
by typing:
scanimage --device-name=hp:/dev/sg2 >test.pnm

it scanned - its a real crappy looking scan - but progress has been made
So on to getting the frontends to work.

Glad it worked
Now it's time to: man xsane

You can run it like: xsane hp:/dev/sg2

Also if you want to use it inside GIMP, read xscanimage's man page.

arrggg - I'm missing something..

(p.s. - got the xsane plugin working with gimp )

Still no programs (gui) see the scanner

"xsane hp:/dev/sg2" gives a "faild to open device 'hp:/dev/sg2': invalid argument"
(come to find out, "scanimage --device-name=hp:/dev/sg2 >test.pnm" won't work now
either.

Gimp allows me to open the xsane dialog box, but only tv card is there - not the scanner

I think I skipped step 2 of 3.

Any suggestions will be great - have to go to work now - will check back this evening.
Maybe a break from this project will do me a good.
thanks for you help gbonvehi.... -tw

Did you tried /dev/sgd?
Also, If i'm not wrong I got my scanner "locked" too until next boot when I was testing sane (I've a parallel port one, maybe that's the problem, but well try rebooting or somehow unloading sane) :/
