Screen Setup and Mounting Floppy
Hello all,
I installed Slack 9 yesterday and decided to recompile the Kernel today (since Slack 9 only contains bare.i). Everything seems to be working normally under the new kernel, but I do have one question. In the Slack setup, I was given the option to change my terminal settings so that when I booted into Linux I would have a penguin at the top of my screen and there would be more horizontal and vertical lines available on the screen. Under the new kernel, I have lost this setup. Is there any way to go back and change this to the way it was before.
Also, I don't know if this has anything to do with my new kernel or not, but I just downloaded a file on this computer (under Windows) and put it on a floppy to transfer over to Linux (I am trying to get a patch over there... see my other post on the Newbies board). I tried to mount it with "mount /mnt/floppy" and was told "mount: You must specify the filesystem type." In my /etc/fstab, /mnt/floppy is listed under type "auto." I then tried to mount it again with "mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy" and "mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy" only to get back "mount: fs type vfat/msdos not supported by kernel". What did I do wrong?

Edit: I tried going back to the old Kernel and everything worked fine (floppy mounted with just "mount /mnt/floppy"). This brings up another question. Is bare.i (the default kernel for Slack 9) just the extreme basics or is it a viable kernel. Is there any way I could patch it a few times to get to a more recent kernel and still keep my older settings (vfat/msdos supported, penguin/smaller terminal). I am also seeing a few errors or things not found on startup with the new kernel that I didn't notice before. I'm just wondering if the new kernel is really worth it. Thanks again. JMagi
