Screen goes into standy after startx
Hi.
I'm new to Slackware. I've been using Ubuntu for a while now and have messed about with other distro's as well.
The problem I have first appeared when I tried to use the Slax live cd, but appears to affect all Slackware-based distro's as I have discovered now I've tried to install Slackware 10.2.
The installation went fine as far as I can tell - no issues. I've done the installation twice now. First time I installed the 2.4 kernel, second time the 2.6. I also tried once with framebuffer and once without.
Either way, when the system reboots after installation and configuration, I've logged in and typed startx and as soon as I've typed startx the monitor seems to go into standby like it's not receiving a signal.
I have no idea what to do at all. Do I need to add an argument at boot?
Many thanks in advance.

what graphics card are you using? Also check the Xorg.0.log file in /var/log for errors.

I'm using an nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 with 128MB RAM.
I'll boot back into Slackware and have a look now.

The last line in the log file you mentioned was:
Quote:
Could not init font path element /usr/X11r6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
|
It seemed to have problems with fonts further back as well.
I have not installed the nVidia drivers yet. I've tried to wget them but my internet connection seems to not be working either at the moment.

using the nvidia drivers will probably solve the problem.
font path errors are non fatal and usually not a problem.

OK, well many thanks for your help.
I will have to reinstall again tomorrow to try and set up the net connection properly and I'll have a go at the nVidia drivers.
I'll post back if the problem still persists.

This line is normal- apparently not every installation has these fonts.
Also to OP:
You have to config the xorg yourself or X will not run. Run xorgconfig as root and then xwmconfig to select which wm you want to use.
