Scratchy sound

I got my sound working, however, when I play anything, the sound is so scratchy that you can't make out anything but random noise. Any clue as to what's going on? Thanks.

What's the sound card, and are you using the out of box driver?

Intel AC '97 onboard.

I just configured the option as a module when I upgraded to the 2.6.10 kernel, then ran alsaconf.

A much newer version of the driver exists in the current ALSA package. You should consider upgrading to the new ALSA, from alsa-project.org.

Also, ALSA is compiled to the kernel version. When you update to a newer kernel, you usually have to recompile ALSA.
