Scanimage -L hangs

I recently upgraded from Slack 9.1 to Slack 10, and have come across a problem.

I own an Epson Perfection 1250. According to lsmod the scanner module is loaded. sane-find-scanner finds my scanner at /dev/usb/scanner0. I realize that sane thinks my scanner is a plustek and have edited /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf accordingly. I've read the scanner-HOWTO at the linux documentation project and can't see that I've missed something.

When I try to run scanimage -L it freezes. Nothing happens, in the same manner, if I try to use xsane.

With Slack 9.1 I checked to make sure the module was loaded, it was, and then went on my happy way with xsane. I'd like to use my scanner, but I don't know why it's not working to fix it.

Anyone have any ideas?
