Sb Live 1024 problem
 

I just installed Slackware8.1 and it took me a few days to fix the wireless intellimouse and now i am trying to fix the sound.My soundcard is Live 1024 but when i first got into X it said that there is a problem with the sound so i asked a friend how to make my Live1024 work and he told me to uncomment some string at modules.rc I did that but i still don't have sound. When i try to play any song i get an error mesage wich says to check my output plugins or to check if my sound card is configured properly. I guess that my system doesn't see my soundcard or something like that. I am a newbie so help me please. By the way, i played around with the Kernel Configuration and i enabled the support about the EMU10K chip of my SB Live. It's still dead. Help meeeeeeeeeeee.

Does lspci list your card?
Plus what module you uncommneted in your rc.modules?
Plus make sure your chmod'd 666 /dev/dsp* /dev/sound* /dev/mixer* /dev/sequencer*

iI uncommented the module about the SB Live EMU10K thing, i don't remember exactly all the words but it was under the sound section.

" i don't know what exactly do you mean. I told you i am new to Linux and i need step by step help. But i am into computers since 1996 and till now i worked with DOS and Windows. Now i am bored of the blue death so i switched to Linux but i still have my Windows ME so i can get on line and stuff like that.

Well, boot linux, login as a regular user, at the prompt type
[prompt]$ /bin/su -
Password: <-------- root's password goes here no asterix or anything seen though
[prompt]# chmod 666 /dev/dsp* /dev/mixer* /dev/audio* /dev/sound* /dev/sequencer*
[prompt]# exit
[prompt]$ startx

:)

I did all thet and i got a message that said: getting configuration for /dev/sound* No such file or directory

Then i checked out the /dev/sound* from the command that you told me and then it didn't give me any message at all.

Look, i am familiar with MC 'cause it is just like NC on DOS. If there is anything to change on any file i can do it, just tell me. I am a newbie on Linux but those days i learned a few things. And thank you for helping me. Please, tell me more on what to do 'cause it's so crazy when you don't have sound. My MP3s are all my life. I have a 12 GBs collection, all downloaded with a dial up connection in 2-3 years.

My friend, i fixed the problem. I don't know how but i fixed it.

Maybe I was wrong about /dev/sound, maybe there is no such file at all, I just didn't check with my system. Since it wasn't there it was skipped but others got proper permissions, that fixed the problem.
