Where can I access the collection of wisecracks that are displayed whenever I start the shell console?

/usr/share/games/fortunes/, I think.

the executable is called fortune

'which fortune' should tell you where it is (since locations can vary)

The which command will only tell you where the executable is, not where the collection of furtunes is stored. If you read 'man fortune' you'll see it mentions the path digiot mentioned above. That's where it keeps its database.
