and other streaming media
I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I was just wondering if anyone had any success with using the mplayer plugin to save streaming media from firefox? I saw that there is a download option, but that seems to just save the playlist when I've used it. I know about using -dumpstream and -dumpfile from the mplayer command line, but I can't find any info on using the plugin to do this.

ok-I did a view>source on the page and found the supposed http location and did this:
huntz@LinuxHippyIII dwhelper]$ vlc http://rbc.edgeboss.net/flash/rbc/dod/programs/2045.flv
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
00000311] main playlist: nothing to play
I also got the same result from saving the flv file with download helper:
huntz@LinuxHippyIII dwhelper]$ vlc 2045.flv
VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
[00000311] main playlist: nothing to play
Can this be done?

I'm going to investigate this. Obviously this site uses RTMP protocol. Apparently RTMP is tunneled through HTTP which gives more problems. I'll post some type of tut if I manage to grab the stream. It's bad that there are oly 24 hours in a day. It's hard to keep up with everything.
BTW, happy birthday.

Yes! Today is my birthday, thank you!
You know a lot about this...how did you find out that it's an RTMP stream?

Use the firefox extensions: flashblock, and live http headers. When you visit a page that has a flash movie you want, open the live http headers extension. The flash movie should still be blocked at this point. Clear any extraneous entries in live http headers, and click on the flash movie. You will see the request that is sent and to what server to get the flash movie. Copy the request and put in browser. Save when prompted. Play with mplayer.

That sounds like it would work, but it's not for me with this stream. I installed both firefox extensions. When the flash player window opens up and is stopped by flash block I right click on the border and pick page info to get to the live http extension. I have another window then with 6 tabs...I cannot clear any of the entries. Am I doing this right?

Hi, in fact you can find those flash video in /tmp.
But once it finished downloaded and you close the page, it gone...
I always grab the flash video there.
So try play a streaming flash video, and run 'ls -l /tmp', you will see something interesting... :-p

I tried that with this stream and didn't see a new file or directory in /tmp before closing the flash window. Have you tried this method with this video? Here is the link again:

Also, which web browser are you using? I cannot find where firefox is caching flash files (some of the cached files go into ~/.mozilla/firefox/kq5pulrn.default/Cache).
