sample asoundrc file in /etc ?

I'm wondering about something, and maybe you guys can help.

I have found that a .asoundrc file almost always has to be present when playing sound from a browser. Since the file follows a standard form, is it possible to put it in a package and put in the default installation, and instruct the user to copy the asound.conf to his home directory if he wants sound in his browser (and rename it to .asoundrc in the process, as follows:

Code:
$ cd /etc
$ cp asound.rc ~/.asoundrc
Everyone who comes up against this shouldn't have to beat his head looking for the solution to this recurring problem. Seems to me that this issue comes up a lot, and not just in Slackware.

If need be, I would be willing to make the package myself. I am by no means asking someone who is already overworked to expend more of their time to do this. I am only asking if this seems like a feasible idea.

Thanks for the consideration.

Regards,

Matt

I have never had a $HOME/.asoundrc file and have no problem playing sound from a browser. Usually (if anything), it is enough to run alsamixer as root and make sure the settings are good defaults, then exit and run "alsactl store". This stores the settings in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.

If /var/lib/alsa/asound.state doesn't exist, rc.alsa tries to make one with reasonable defaults, but it's hard to come up with a default file that works for every audio chipset. Most of my installs do have working sound out of the box, though.

Interesting. I've always had to make an .asoundrc file in my home directory. Oh, well. It was worth a try...
