samba with security = user
Samba problems again
I want to set up my new samba 3.0.5 server with "user" security as I have to deal with a mix of WinME, XP Home and NT4 machines, which rules out "domain"
I read that "share" security is deprecated.
When I try to connect from a Windows PC I get a password box for //server/IPC$ but nowhere to enter user name, so the password gets rejected. Looking in /var/log/samba.winMEpc I see reports about "nobody"
Guest access is not enabled.
If I set "share" then I can see the public directories, but have no write rights as I am not logged in as a known user
Usernames and passwords are the same in Windows, console and samba

You should post your smb.conf, but anyway here is my section of [homes] that might help you
Code:
[homes]
comment = User
path = /home/%U
valid users = %S
read only = No

With security set to share, make sure you have your permissions on your directories set correctly. If they're only accessible by root, then your other users won't be able to access them. You can always do a chmod -r 777 /dir/path and give that a try.
As for security = user. Make sure you've set the password for the user with smbpasswd, and that the user exists in /etc/passwd (it sounds like you've already one that). And make sure you're logging into your windows me box with MS Networking instead of Windows Logon or MS Family Logon. Also, try non-blank passwords.
I hope this helps. I just threw a bunch of ideas out there for you hoping one works for you.

My samba ask for a password.I used a windows 2000 to access the shared folder but it prompts for a password.. thus the domain plays a role in here. do i have to set the domain of both it let say domain.com in order not for me to ask for a password

I now have it working
The problem was using webmin 1.16 to migrate unix users to samba users. Entering on console:
smbclient -L server -U user #returns a password prompt
This gave an error
removing the user and readding with smbpasswd made the smbclient command work as expected

This was down to a corrupted webmin install, there was a tar error that I did not notice.
Also note that webmin can only migrate unix users that were created by webmin
