well /var/log/samba/log.smbd prints out the following (in a single attempt to start it up)

I don't have cups enabled at all as you'll see in my smb.conf
The nmbd output (if I start it manually) is:

apparently it halted because it can't find the subnet 192.168.144. and 192.168.145. (these are both vpn, and the server is not running currently)
