Uh, no. It is neither the WM for Gnome, nor does it depend on Gnome:

Before we go any further, it is time to clean up some common misconceptions. First, Enlightenment is not new. It is OLD. It predates larger desktop environments like GNOME or XFCE.

Enlightenment is fairly old school was desktop environments go, but it's very complete and well featured.

OK... I'm giving SALIX OS another shot. Everything seems to be running OK on my ACER laptop. Now I need to install virtualbox but cannot seem to be able to find a package. I might have to download the binary from the website and try installing it that way. Do you guys know if there is a package out there already? I haven't been able to find one.
Another thing I would like to do is upgrade my FF and Opera browsers to its latest version but they don't seem to be available in the repository. How do I go about installing the latest versions?
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Virtualbox is available from SlackBuilds.
The latest Opera available for Linux is 12.16, I believe, also at SlackBuilds. I understand there will be no further Linux versions.

I installed Salix64 14.1 on two machines a month or two ago. I used the VirtualBox binary from Oracle and it works well.
I didn't try building it from Slackbuilds.org but it should work as long as the dependencies are handled. Salix has a variety of software installation tools that work with the Slackware environment and packaging standards.
Salix has an active and friendly forum at forum.salixos.org. You may want to join to more efficiently handle your questions/issues.

I have used vector and its stable and the package management is pretty good. It comes with multimedia libraries included. Also there is a very good support forum at forums.vectorlinux.com where you can reach developers and maintainers directly.

Thank you guys. I'm going to try to install virtualbox from Oracle. I tried doing it via slackbuilds but couldn't get it install so I'm just going to try to binary.
Fogpipe, I have run VL in the past and I liked it but I wanted to try out salix and zenwalk.
Thanks for the info guys.

I run slackel openbox. Excellent way of installing a pre-configured desktop. There is also a KDE release but have not tried that.

OK... so I tried to install the binary for virtualbox and got the following messages:
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox for Linux installation............
VirtualBox Version 4.3.12 r93733 (2014-05-16T13:09:01Z) installer
Please install the build and header files for your current Linux kernel.
The current kernel version is 3.2.45-smp
Problems were found which would prevent VirtualBox from installing.
Please correct these problems and try again.

I have checked the packages and the kernel-header 3.2.45_smp-x86-3 appears to be installed. I run the binary again and it still didn't work.

I had the same problem with Salix (32 bit version).
What helped me was to re-install the kernel source, although the kernel-headers *were* installed already. So in a terminal give the following commands as root ('su'): slapt-get -u (to update the package database) and then: slapt-get -i kernel-source (to install the kernel source package).
I am not sure if this will work on the 64 bit version, but you might give it a try.

Hi NullNullNix,
You are right. I installed the source and the header after I posted my last post and everything worked.
Thanks for the info.
