You can shut off Sendmail, most likely. As root, go to pkgtool > Setup > services, and uncheck it. Then, for immediate effect, do /etc/rc.d/rc.sendmail stop. Other than that, most of that stuff can stay on.

I'll try that. I wonder if that would be enough to cause that freezing.... doesn't seem like it though. Any other ideas as to why stuff is freezing? The only app I have had open consistently each time is gaim, maybe that is it. I can try posting the errors from /var/logs if you want.

sendmail doesn't consume anywhere near enough
ram to be able to bring the system to a halt, I'd much
more suspect firefox (maybe in conjunction with java
on websites) as the culprit... that is, if it's the OS at all
and not some flaky hardware or a misbehaving proprietary
graphics driver ...

Cheers,
Tink

That makes sense. I'll try keeping firefox closed and use Konqueror or something. If it is firefox how can I fix it so I can keep using it regularly without freezing the system?

Oh...I used to get lockups from using Nvidia driver with cursor shadowing turned on. You using either of those by chance?

I've got the new IA32 Nvidia driver. I'll try turning off cursor shadowing, is that in kcontrol under mouse?

At first, I thought this post was about getting rid of stuff that you didn't need running on your system. After reading it a few times (especially WMD's last post) I am beginning to think that this post is really more like, "My computer freezes and I want to fix it. I think that it is because there is too much memory being used."

If that is the case. Why not try "free -m" to see how much memory is being used up. You could also try switching to a lightweight WM like fluxbox or xfce. If you still have lock ups, it is probably something else. Like WMD, I have had plenty of lock ups caused by video cards. SiS an NVidia both. With and without accelaration. With and without composites. One thing that has never failed is using the nv driver on an nvidia card without composite. Try changing to that for a day or so and see if that gets rid of the lockups. If so, just switch back to the nvidia driver and tweak xorg.conf until you get a setup that is more stable for you.
