Running MySQL from the distro

I have troubles running MySQL 3.23 from the tgz package in my Slackware 9.0 CD.
I tried '/usr/bin/mysql_install_db' and got:
Quote:
Installing all prepared tables
040226 14:47:27 /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown Complete

To start mysqld at boot time you have to copy support-files/mysql.server
to the right place for your system

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
This is done with:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h ivanatora password 'new-password'
See the manual for more instructions.

NOTE: If you are upgrading from a MySQL <= 3.22.10 you should run
the /usr/bin/mysql_fix_privilege_tables. Otherwise you will not be
able to use the new GRANT command!

You can start the MySQL daemon with:
cd /usr ; /usr/bin/safe_mysqld &

You can test the MySQL daemon with the benchmarks in the 'sql-bench' directory:
cd sql-bench ; run-all-tests

Please report any problems with the /usr/bin/mysqlbug script!

The latest information about MySQL is available on the web at
http://www.mysql.com
Support MySQL by buying support/licenses at https://order.mysql.com
Then I tried to set passwords:
Quote:
# /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'something'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!
Tried to start the server:
Quote:
(14:50:31)[root@/home/ivanatora]# /usr/bin/safe_mysqld &
[1] 17796
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
040226 14:50:39 mysqld ended
[1]+ Done /usr/bin/safe_mysqld
(14:50:41)[root@/home/ivanatora]#
Tried to start direclty mysqld:
Quote:
(14:51:51)[root@/home/ivanatora]# /usr/libexec/mysqld --user=mysql &
[1] 17821
040226 14:52:04 /usr/libexec/mysqld: Can't find file: './mysql/host.frm' (errno: 13)
[1]+ Exit 1 /usr/libexec/mysqld --user=mysql
(14:52:06)[root@/home/ivanatora]#
I read in the docs that the error could be caused if mysql_install_db is not run. But I run it without error.
Possible solution?
Maybe I should download binaries or sources and try with them?
