runlevel 4 prob -- resuce!!

Hi,

I'm setting up Slack 10 on a pc and he wants a graphical login. I have that running well and the system is running fine except for one little problem. At first I was using the i810 Xorg driver for the video card but after a little searching online I found out that the i830 driver should be better. I changed the driver in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but forgot to change the default runlevel back to 3 before rebooting. Now I have a system which will not boot, it tries to enter runlevel 4 but fails.

I need to get into the system and change the xorg.conf back but I can't do this. I have the slack10 disks here, how do I use them to get to logon to the system and make the change??

At the boot prompt, type in the number of the runlevel to boot into.

If your X server is just starting up badly, you should still be able to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get into a text terminal. If your X server keeps crashing (switching to terminal 7 then switching back) then you just have to wait a minute or so; if it respawns too quickly then it will be disabled.

boot with CD and then mount the partition. Go in and edit /etc/inittab back to runlevel 3. Then reboot normally.

Just found the solution, with Slack cd 2 (I guess cd 1 would also work) type at boot promt:

Code:
bare.i root=/dev/hda1 noinitrd ro telinit 3
and hey presto it works. Thanks for putting me in the right direction.

You can do it other ways also with (something like):
linux single
or:
init=/sbin/bash
