Rtl8111/8168b ?

I'm considering a new computer with C2Q Q9550Intel.
Not sure about mobo.
I'm not a gamer; so top of the game is not required.
A P35 chipset seems enough for me.
Preferably everything should work out of the box.

On top of my list is the ASUS P5K-E Wifi (still available?)
Second is the Giga GA-P35-DS3P.
Have my doubts about the above mentioned LAN after reading several posts here.
Anybody with a working RTL8111/8168B LAN on slack-12.2?

Your help will be much appreciated.

What were the problems you mentioned?

Well I read on http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Realtek_8168 that there problems with newer cards.
And I read a discussion here about compiling the downloaded driver from Realtek and calling it r8168 i.s.o.r8169.

Glad you mentioned that you had no problems.
Did the Realtek Audio ALC889A also work out of the box?

Thanks alot

I bought the motherboard around Jan 2008, no problems since back then. No issues with soundcard either. Slackware's default kernel & modules recognizes them easily.

There were issues with these on-board nics
Code:
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 02)
	Subsystem: Giga-byte Technology GA-EP45-DS5 Motherboard
But they have been fixed in recent kernels. All of the RTL8111/8168B's have had one issue or another over the years. The rev01's were quickly fixed, the rev02's went ~1.5 years without a fix. It's all good now

I have another system with Realtek Audio ALC889A, has worked out of the box for as long as I've owned it.

Arrow

Thank you all.

I just have been informed that both P35 mobo's cannot be delivered anymore.
I now go for the ASUS P5K WS
It has the ALC888 and 2 Marvell LAN's
Have had the Marvell without any problems some years ago.
