root sees scanner, but not normal users
Which device files do I need to set permissions on for usb devices, particularly a scanner.
I guess I need to do this since only root can see the scanner and I do not find a /dev/usb/scanner0 entry in 2.6 like I find in 2.4.
Plus, is there a site with a really good explanation of the way devices are handled in 2.6 vs. 2.4?

more on problem
Ok, I found out that /dev/usbdev<number> which has scanner as group and appears and disappears as the scanner is plugged in and out. So, I add the normal user to scanner group,
moduser -G scanner <user>
which appears in /etc/group correctly. But, still no joy on a normal user accessing the scanner, only root can.
So, what now?

I think there are 2 ways to do this (I think).
1. You can add yourself to the "plugdev" group. I'm not totally sure this will help you though.
2. You can create a new UDEV rule in "/etc/udev/rules.d" that assigns the scanner permission to a particular group, and then make sure you are in than group.
If you are running Slack 12.0 you most likely will benefit from making a custom udev rule... let me know if this helps you at all.

The new udev rule worked for normal users.
# Canon FB630U
SYSFS{idVendor}=="04a9", SYSFS{idProduct}=="2204", MODE="660", GROUP="scanner"
But, I still have the problem of it taking a very long time to start scanning on the first scan after plugging it in. Sometimes it only takes around thirty seconds, and sometimes you give up waiting.
This problem does not exist on a Ubuntu 7.10 system.
