What kind of connection is it to your machine? Usually Cable Modems connect through a normal network card. Which means it simply a matter of setting up you ethernet card as eth0 and usually just setting up DHCP. I'm running on a Blueyonder Cable Modem (1Mb) and Debian set it up when I installed.

If you go into the menu and look under system for Info Center. In their look for network connections, and check to see if eth0 is listed. If not then where going to have to set up your network card.

Got to check the /etc/rc.d/modules.conf file....look for your card and uncomment driver if needed.Run ifconfig and see what you get, should see loopback and eth0 if its up.You can modprobe or insmod the right module probably and see what happens. Then set up DHCP.....it will work, roadrunner wont help you though.
