Ressurrectin' an old laptop
Hello! I'm quite newbe in Linux wolrd, so I'm a bit lost.
Last week I was given this pretty machine:
ADLine laptop:
486/dx2 @ 66MHz processor
4Mb ram
335 HardDisk
Internal FloppyDisk
2 PCMCIA sockets
It had MS/DOS installed, but I quickly formatted the disk. After a few tries, finally I found out the Slakware 3.0 distro, wich was the only wich happened to work propperly. I made and fdisk with the folling:
Id System
/dev/had1 83 Linux Native (128Mb)
/dev/had2 5 Extended
/dev/had5 82 Linux swap (40Mb)
/dev/had6 6 DOS 16-bit >=32M (the rest)
I've installed the Slackware 3.0 distro with the minimal pakages needed. I actually have it working, and I'm trying to get Xfree86 working.
I've installed also de X pakage. Then I run the XF86config, and made the config file. After some attempts I got the folling error:
Config Erro: /etc/XF86Config:370
Modes 640x400
^^^^^^^
Mode name expected
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unexpected signal 13
What am I doing wrong?
What can i do?
Is there someone else trying to ressurrect an old PC?

Glad I found this thread! I recently acquired a laptop of similar specifications and have been thinking about putting an old version of Slackware on it. Very brave of you to try this if you're new to Linux! Will X really run on something with so little RAM? I think the problem you mention above is caused by a lack of quotation marks, i.e. the line should read
Modes "640x480"
Probably best to avoid updating the kernel if it works as it is. You might be able to squeeze a little more performance out of the laptop, but it's probably going to be difficult to get the kernel set up, particularly if you've not tried compiling a kernel before.
I'll be off on a trip for the next few days, but when I get back I could try setting up my laptop and we could share experiences if we get stuck.

Thanks comprookie2000!
the file generated by XF86config is almost the same you've shown me. Maybe it's because lack of video memory, but I don't know how much it has.
Leavin' X apart, I'm using this laptop for developing aplications for robot control via RS-232. Any idea what software, language, compiler... to use?
The model is :
Model number: NBE
Type: 750M/486DX2-66
ADLine by ADL
excuse me for my English, I'm spanish :P

I'm curious, did you try the lowmem kernel that Pat provides? The lowmem kernel is designed for systems with eight megs of ram and there is a patch to allow it to work with 4 megs.
That laptop can still do duty as a commanline only machine or even a DNS server for a private network, but I don't think you'd happy with X even if you got it running.
