I have to say, I don't think I would buy this computer again!
I have an old dell with the nvidia card, which I gave to my kids. I had slack on it for many years with out trouble. I never had this kind of problem with it.

This new computer has been nothing but headaches.
It is a IBM lenovo W500.

1. Stupid thing did not come with disks. I had to burn 10+ rescue cds.
2.The computer comes out of the box with three partitions.
The first is a recovery partition, second vista, third is bloatware. I had tremendous trouble getting the vista partition under 100 gb without ruining the os on a 230 gig hdd. Several times I had to use the rescue disks to reinstall vista which wipes the entire hdd. It wipes even the ext3 partitions. I think lenovo is too cheap to supply the necessary disks.
On the other hand, dell came with the os disk and a sparate drivers disk. And a third bloatware disk. That way, I could reinstall vista on its own partition if I had messed up by shrinking the partition too small.
3. The computer comes with switchable graphics controlled by the bios. What for?? One intel card and one ati card. When I first installed slack, I could not startx because of display problems. It was just easiest do disable the intel in the bios. It has been nothing but a big headache compiling a new kernel and reinstalling the ati drivers a few times.
4. Not to mention problems with the modem. I finally got the problem solved. Both my new and old computers have the conexant modem. I had no problems installing it on the old dell computer like this new one.

It has already taken me a month to set things up. I don't usually have that much time to waste on such things. Hopefully I can get this working so I can move on.....
