renameing directories??

How the hell do you rename a directory??
I tried rename old filename new filename, with no luck
I guess it only works on files.
I have to do this at the command prompt with root rights.
I cant' use the file manger.
Slack 10.2

use the mv command (move):

# mv olddir newdir
