ReiserFS with 2.5.15.2 Kernel Boot Issues

Hey all,

I just reinstalled Slackware on my Inspiron laptop, I wanted to fix the way the partitions were made and decided that I may as well try this ReiserFS. I have always used ext3 and never really had the chance to try the other one, so I decided today seemed good.

My problem is that upon upgrading my kernel, I cannot boot anymore. I get this error:

Code:
Check root filesystem:
fsck 1.35

Failed to open device /dev/hda4: No such file or directory.

Warning fsck.reiserfs for device /dev/hda4 exited on warning 6.
I believe that is the exact error, the computer rebooted before I managed to copy the last few words down, but it should be right. When I upgraded I know my hard drive changed. It used to be /dev/hda4, not it is /dev/sda4. I used the Slax boot disk to rerun lilo so that lilo now points do /dev/sda4.

I am not sure why it is still trying to look for anything on /dev/hda4. I've never used ReiserFS, so I'm thinking maybe there was an extra step that I did not know about or something?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris

It sounds like you have a SATA disk and that the disk is set up as SCSI SATA, ie in your .config file when you configured your new kernel you have CONFIG_SCSI_SATA=y set. If it is a SATA drive, you should be able to modify /etc/fstab to use sda devices instead of hda. If it's not a SATA drive, check your kernel config to see why IDE support is turned off.

The Dell Optiplex I have at work can use either mode (SATA or IDE) depending on the BIOS settings for the hard drive. However, the easiest method is probably to go back to what you were using with your previous kernel.

Just out of curiousity, did you copy over your old .config file and run make oldconfig when you built your new kernel?
