Regular user accounts wont stay logged in

The root user account is stable, and has no problems. But the regular user accounts will not stay logged in. Sometimes it takes two or three attempts to log in. Then when the account reaches desktop, it might last less than a minute before dropping back to the XDM log in. Other times it is fine.

I have tried deleting the user account, and recreating it, and creating new users. The result is the same for all users, except root.

The set up is standard Slackware 13 with the Xfce desktop, using XDM.

Are the "regular" users local?

Sounds to me like there is a process running in the background that is causing issues like an audit program or something. I know this is not very useful, but without more info about your environment, its kinda tough to figure this one out.

What happens when a user logs in at the console? Let's start by eliminating things, X11 should be first.

What graphics adaptor do you have? (Look at the output of /sbin/lspci).
This is reminiscent of problems I had with an Intel 82865G graphics chip.

is your /tmp directory writable by non-root users?

An X session will mysteriously fail if that is not the case.

voyciz - logging in from the command line returns no error messages. Running startx starts the desktop, with no apparent problems.

allend - the graphics adapter is the ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x. I have been running an Ubuntu/Debian based distro on this PC for about three years now, but have had no problems like this.

Alien Bob - /tmp permissions are drwxrwxrwt 7 root root, which from what I've read, appears to be normal.

I had been playing around with the Xsetup_0 and Xresources files, trying to customise the login screen. I have restored the originals, but the problem persists.

Do your users have the correct group permissions? They should be in the video group.

Try
$ id USERNAME

They seem to be OK:
gid=100(users) groups=100(users),17(audio),18(video),19(cdrom),83(plugdev),84(power),86(netdev)

I have been trying to track down each of the error messages, but none seem to cause the problem I have.

I can get to the account usually after two attempts. Though this time, I got in on the first attempt!

I have just seen the .xsession-errors file:
Code:
xrdb: "Xft.hinting" on line 9 overrides entry on line 6
xrdb: "Xft.hintstyle" on line 11 overrides entry on line 7

I guess this thread is closed now. The laptop the problem was on, has shuffled off this mortal realm...

I now have Slackware on a Toshiba Satellite 1800-314, and the problem does not seem to have reoccurred. This ancient lappy has it own challenges...
