Refresh rate lock

Hi all. X problem. I usually work in 1280x1024 85Hz. Fine. I set it up in the XF86Config to obtain this. My question: I play games wich go full screen in lower resolutions (like 1152x864 or 1024x768) and noticed that the refresh rate always drops to the minimum, usually 60Hz. Is there a way to LOCK the refresh rates to each resolution?
Thx

do you mind if i ask how to you set the refresh rate like that to begin with? all xf86config asks me for is a range of values...my monitor is flickering and i can't figure out how to fix it. my range is like 40-160, so how do I know which value it finally settles on?

First of all, if you see it flickering, you are surely set in 60Hz.
All I set i vertical and horizontal refresh rates in XF86Config. Be careful to set the right values or youll risk to blow it up (the monitor). Then in the Display section I specify 1280x1024 as unique resolution.
My Monitor has only one button to set all the properties. If I press it to adjust contrast and brightness it tells me the refresh rate. What really throws me off is that it uses the maximum refresh rate for the maximum resolution specified in the "display" section, and then if you drop down to lower resolutions the refresh jumps down to 60Hz no matter what. And this is makin me nutz...
Another question: if I specify more than one resolution int the Display section I noticed that with "ctrl + alt + '+' " it does switch resolution, but it goes to that "desktop scroll" mode, wich is pretty much useless. I am sure there must be a parameter to set somewhere to have the real resolution, instead of having to scroll arround the desktop. Anyone?
