refresh options for LCD
hey all,
I am just wondering what i should set the refresh rates to for a LCD. I know lcd displays dont do refresh rates the same as CRT monitors. I am trying to get X working on a Dell Inspiron 8200 mobile 1.6ghz p4 nvidia geforce 4 440 go 32meg. Any help would be great! thanx Kriptek |
Well on my phillips LCD it is:
HorizSync 31.5 - 48.5 VertRefresh 50-90 Works great, it's a 15". Hope that helps, and if it doesn't work you can just play with different refresh rates. Most LCD's will just refuse to turn on if they can't handle the options given. -NSKL |
Have you tried *NOT* configuring X? That seems to be how it works on my laptop. All you *should* need to change is the color depth in the XF86config file.

ok,
NSKL i tried what you said, no go. However i did notice that after i killed X there was an error that said "/dev/dsp: No such device" does this mean it cant find my display ? Astro, When you say have i tried not configuring X do you mean after the install finishes up, issuing start X right away? If so, no i havent tried that yet. Any way to get back to that point with out re-installing ? Thanx guys, Kriptek |
No, dev/dsp is the way linux talks to your sound card, different issue. Sound is probably the thing you'll be trying to get working once the display works :)

Well i guess you'll have to play with xf86config then, until you get the right options. Also there's xfree86setup in /usr/X11R6/bin to help you out.
Good luck -NSKL |

I have the same hardware but I am running RH7.3. I had to do some convoluted stuff but it ended up working.
I did the install for the NVIDIA Kernel driver as well as the GLX driver. Don't upgrade the GLX remove the GLX driver and then reinstall per the README file from NVIDIA. After that i mod'd the config file for X as per the NIVIDIA readme. After that, I backed up the config files as *.good. Reboot and your machine should come up with 1024 X 768 when starting X. Stop X and go to terminal and run Xconfigurator. Choose the Dell 1600X1200 Laptop Display. Choose the options for the video card and don't probe for chipset. You will get an error but it will save the file and the correct monitor settings to the configuration file. After that, I just replaced the settings in the new config file with the old ones from my GOOD config and restarted X .. everything came up after that.. As far as I can tell thought 1400X1050 is the biggest you can get the monitor at 24 depth. Oh by the way this was using KDE as the desktop.. haven' tried GNOME YET!. Oh by the way this is with the Hight End laptop monitor. Check Dell for your Maximum Resolution before running Xconfigurator Good luck |
