Recompiling kernel with modem driver

I have an external USB 56k winmodem and I want to get it working properly with my Slackware install. I downloaded a driver for it which works, but not well.

I read that I could get it working better if I recompiled my kernel with the driver source, so my question is: how to I do this? I have read through the "Kernel Compiling for Newbies" thread and I have a good idea of how to do it, but I'm not sure what to do with my driver source.

Am I talking rubbish, or is this actually possible?

I don't think that there is any such thing as an external winmodem. What is the brand and model number of your external modem?

I am almost certain it is a winmodem, I am basing that on the fact that it isn't easilly supported by Linux. It is a trust external USB dial-up modem, no model number, but it's chipset is called "SGS"

Here is a link to an information page on it's SGS chipset, and from what I can tell, it says it is a winmodem.
