Recompiling Kernel 2.4.29 ==> Alsa doesnt work.

Dear Slackers,

Simple but akward,

Do the alsa packages have any dependencies? or can I simply just upgrade to the latest 1.0.9 while running 2.4.29||2.6.10 and slackware 10.1. If i can, can I simply use the slackbuilds from slackware-current, or have there been any radically changes in a minor release.

Can I also have a word on binary compatibility with packages of previous releases, would it be unsafe to use these binaries...such as the 10.0 release.

Thanks.

ALSA doesn't have dependencies in the conventional sense. Just make sure that ALSA isn't already in the kernel. And then compile ALSA from source and you will have perfect ALSA.
Note: If recompiling ALSA.... don't removepkg the ALSA files installed by Patrick Volkerding. Just compile over the previous ALSA packages.

ok...

Well,

I know Alsa is included in 2.6.x series, so I don't have to recompile, and I do recall the sound working perfectly with the 2.6.10 kernel that I compiled with teremendous ease ( I don't know why people have troubles with the 2.6.x series ).

So in algorithmic terms, I just get the source slackware packages from 10.1 or current and Slackbuild them(without removepkging the old ones).

Thank you.
