recompiling kernel

Is recompiling the kernel the same as upgrading it? I wanted to upgrade my kernel from the slack 8.1 distro to the 9.1 version. What version should I use to upgrade or recompile it. Sorry for the newbie question!

no, it isn't the same... recompiling is simply tweaking the current kernel, upgrading starts with a fresh higer-version of the kernel i'd use 2.4.24, but you can always try 2.6.2 you can go to http://www.kernel.org for the latest kernel source
