Recompile, then black screen

Recompiled my kernel like so:
"make menuconfig", "make dep && make clean bzImage"
"cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz"
"vi /etc/lilo.conf"

I was very careful with everything, being that this is my 5th time waiting out the recompile to errors before, and now a black screen...=[[
Edited it to this:

hda3= /boot/vmlinuz
Label = Linux
read-only

hda3= /boot/vmlinuz-ide-2.4.22
Label = Linux.old
read-only

Reboot, chose Label = Linux, "Uncompressing Linux Kernel" then black screen.. I can hear my punk PC working in the background so maybe everything is loading fine and I just misconfigured something in menuconfig? Do I need "Video for Linux"
driver? Someone please help me. I've been trying everything since Friday.. can't use my new kernel... I even tried earlier suggestions of "make install and make modules , make modules_install, only to get errors , so I figured I'd try it this way. Seems I' am doing something wrong.. can someone please attempt to point it out for me? thank you!

I think you have to do make modules then make modules_install after you've compiled the kernel. Also, you may need to compile other drivers. I, for instance, have an Nvidia graphics card so I have to compile that and install it each time I recopmpile the kernel as it's very specific, the one that worked with the old kernel never works with the new one. But your milage may be different, it depends on your hardware. The other issue is which C compiler did you use? If you use a particular C compiler to build the kernel, you need to use the same one to compile any other modules (ALSA, modem drivers, graphics)

I compilied my first Slackware kernel on Saturday. It took me two attempts. The first one was very similar to yours. The reason.............. I forgot to select the FrameBuffer in the config stage. Check whether your default used the FrameBuffer. If so there's your answer If not wait for an expert to answer

All the best.

sounds like a framebuffer deal to me. Could you post your config file?

Also, if you get errors while doing make modules etc. that is not good. Unless your are compiling everything into your kernel you will need those modules.

hmmm, try passing:

Linux vga=normal

at the boot: prompt. This will bypass the black screen...

then compile in framebuffer support if you want, as suggested by others.
