rc.modules deprecated?

Mucking around in my system trying to solve several problems I am having right now, I stumbled across /etc/rc.d/rc.modules. I notice that it has a modification date of sometime back in 2003, and I am pretty certain that a number of changes have taken place in module loading since then. (rc.modules mentions kernel 2.2.x) I am pretty sure this file is also the reason that I get warning messages during boot that my via-rhine module can't be loaded (I've long since compiled it in directly) and ide-scsi module can't be found (probably because I don't compile it anymore).

Is there still a use for rc.modules?

don't let the date at the top of the file fool you - the rc.modules file is still maintained (it's part of the kernel-modules package), and it's the primary and most simple method for loading kernel modules on slackware...

Okay, then I think I'll open it back up with vim and make a few tweeks.

I wonder if I can get it to load i2c_core. Doesn't appear that anything else can.

Thanks.
