Report the issues with KMS. That's the only way to make sure they are fixed. Pretty soon we're going to see KMS become required for anything more than basic 3D acceleration (if even that). The driver developers are just not going to spend much time fixing errors that are specific to UMS any more.

As for whether it's safe to drop back to 1.7.7... I have no idea. It would probably also require dropping back mesa and libdrm.

IMHO, there is no point in running -current and back-grading xorg-server

About KMS I agree with adamk75. KMS is soon becoming mandatory. For instance this is already the case for the "nouveau" X driver (for nVidia cards), though it doesn't have 3D acceleration yet.

if that's the case..looks like i gotta stick with KMS then, unless i have time to fiddle around with rolling back to xorg 1.7.7 (IF that's the problem) ..a bit bummed because my system was super rock-solid stable + flicker free before this!
