random system lockups
 

Hello everyone,

I dunno if anyone saw an older thread of mine, but i used to be having problems with my internet working for 15 or so minute intervals and then stopping for another 15 or so minutes. Well i did a full reinstall and all seems to be working now....Except now a new, and not so fun, problem has appeared. Now whenever i am using the interent for any time from about 20 minutes to an hour, my computer will freeze, screen is locked, keyboard is dead, mouse not moving, system time not changing, nothing. The weird part is that this only happens while using the internet, usually when i click on a link or something in a browser(i've tried multiple browsers so thats not the problem i dont think). If i leave the computer just chillin, doing nothing, it wont freeze. and also it froze when i tried to use swaret, both while in X, and at the command line, so i think that rules out X as being the problem also. I am led to beleive that it is something to do with my network drivers or something simliar, maybe an IRQ conflict? I really have no clue. Is there a way to check a log of what was happening in the system right up the freeze or something like that? So if anyone needs me to post more info, just tell me.

Is this a dual boot machine, with Windows? If so, your box may be infected, but that's probably not the case. I would definitely run a full system scan just to eliminate this as a possibility.

More likely though, you probably have a memory problem, since it seems pretty unlikely that a network driver problem would freeze up the entire box including the mouse and keyboard.

The questions to ask are: have you recently installed new memory, or added more memory, and if you're using more than one stick, are they operating at the same speed? (My 2 cents - when using more than one stick of RAM, make certain they are identical.) My guess is that you may be using mix-and-match RAM, which definitely can open up the door to system weirdness. You should also consider performing a memory test http://www.memtest86.com/

Dunno if that will solve the problem but that's what I'd try first. Good luck with it -- J.W.

I have the same MOBO and perhaps the same problem which i can´t solve (by now)

My computer freezes when i transfer data in my LAN...
only a small amount of constant data crashes my PC!!!
e.g. when i try to watch a movie over LAN it´ll play for 5 sec and then my computer stops!
or if i copy data from my server to this PC!

btw. i use slackware current with SAMBA 3.0.2a

curiosly my serverpc (also slackware) will not crash!
When i used windows (connected to sambaserver) i had no problem...
so i don´t think it will be a hardwareproblem...

i didn´t tried to install slackware 9.1 (not current) an do things here...
when YOU have no clue what to do i must reinstall my system and give slackware9.1 a try :-)

hmm thats weird that we both have a very similiar problem. Thanks JW for the suggestions, um ya i know i have matching ram, and its always worked perfectly in windows(so yes i am dual booting) for the last year or so i've used the computer so i dont beleive i have faulty ram, i'll try that test though just to make sure, oh and also i've had mandrake running perfectly on this computer before, which is making me think its a slackware specific problem possibly. But hey im just a noob so what do i know

I forgot to add, i was just messing around with it a bit ago and i started to get the internet-dying problems again, so now this just really sucks :( My internet died and then 2 minutes later my computer froze, that wasnt too fun.

I just checked and there was nothing there close to the time of the crash, or even error related for that matter. I was gonna post it just to make sure but my computer locked up again, i'll try and post it later if anyone thinks it'll help at all

Ok, well i reinstalled again(im getting good at this :)), and now I'm making more progress...basically everything works perfectly, no lockups or anything UNLESS i try and do swaret --upgrade -a, for some weird reason that locks up my computer after about 10 minutes of downloading every time. The even weirder thing is that i upgraded xfree86 and kde and a few other things using swaret and it worked perfectly, only trying to do a complete system upgrade freezes the comp. I really have no clue what could be causing this problem, its not really too big of deal since i dont even use too many apps, but i'd still like to be able to upgrade my install to current if i want to. I guess i could try slapt-get but i dont beleive it has a dependency check and i'd kinda like to have that.

have you moved your machaine at all?
you might have a flaky network cable generating errors to cause the network services to hang upand thereby your kernel
