quick questions
 

i've recently installed slackware 9.0 w/out serious problems and now have some issues w/ setting up a firewall (guarddog = temporary) and getting a GUI on boot.

1) how do i get the GUI to load on boot? i don't feel very comfortable having login as superuser to get into KDE, so i'd like to avoid logging in as root unless it's neccessary.

2) how do i get guarddog to work correctly on slack 9? i've d/l'ed the .tgz for both 2.0.0 and 2.1.4, but both will not execute post install (it claims the command is "not found" when executed as root), and when i try to execute it from tty1 it gives me the msg "error while loading shared libraries: libfam.so.0: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory."

open the file '/etc/inittab' and change the first script line

id:4:initdefault:


regarding command not found, check where the program executable is being installed and then check your system path

Reccomendation.... learn and use iptables and forget guarddog

Another question, why would you need to be root or super user. You can be a regular user to get into KDE from a command line.. :confused:

maybe i'm being retarded...
 

regarding iptables: i'm in the process of learning how to set it up myself, but the iptables tutorial from netfiler.org is long as hell. my plan was to put guarddog up in the meantime to keep me a bit safer until i had time to read/use all the info in the tutorial. so i agree that guarddog is chaff, but i wanted some peace of mind until i get iptables functional.

as for the starting kde business, to start the GUI login i execute kdm, which only runs as root. i'm probably being stupid w/ my choice of command, so suggesting the appropriate replacement to kdm would be appreciated.

You'll want to log in initially to the user account. If you want to verify/select the desktop environment use the command "xwmconfig" to choose which which will start. Then the command to start the desktop environment of choice is:
startx
