Quick Question

OK I think this is a retarded question but I can't find the solution. I installed 10.0.

Now when I start the computer and I log on, all I get is text based stuff like DOS. I can't figure out how to log in so that I am in the desktop which is what I want.

Thanks!

Xorg installed

if you've installed X, then login with password, the "startx" is the command to enter to graphic mode, in Slackware10 you dont have to configure X if you dont need it. If you don't know what im talking about, then you have to read a lot of linux stuff... http://www.slackware.com/book/index....rce=c1364.html

good luck

First off I will assume that you installed X and and Window Manager/Desktop Environment. Here is a quick tutorial

startx (starts x w/ the default config file)

if you do not have X configured and the default does not work, or you want better performance then run these commands (I use 9.1...so I am going to try my best to update the commands from xfree86 to x.org)

xorgsetup
xorgconfig

^^^maybe capitalize the X...I havne't uxed x.org yet.

In 9.1 the x config file was XF86Config or XF86Config-4 so I guess it would be XorgConfig or XorgConfig-4 Regardless this file is in the /etc directory and you can manually edit it to your liking. Always save a backup like this

cp XorgConfig XorgConfig.bak

(assuming that is the name of the file.)

and just as a side note WinDOZE semi-crashed on me while posting this

First Give the information about distibution you use.

And try this from your text mode

startx

if you want to go for GUI.

And have you installed Xwindows?

Cheers

hi,
first, i assume you installed slackware and have setup X stuff according to the posts above. then, since it seems you don't like text based stuff at all, edit the file /etc/inittab so the "id:3:initdefault:" (the 3 could be 2 or 5, but i believe it should be 3) line becomes "id:4:initdefault:" which will present you with a graphical login screen. but then again, you will have to learn to like text based stuff because it is useful.
cheers.
