Quick processes question

Can somebody tell me why opening a terminal window (or anything I think) needs to start 7 (give or take) processes on my machine?

Using the system monitor toll gizmo I can see process go from say 78 to 85 when I open a terminal, and if I execute a "ps -e" I notice a lot of repeated processes -- mozilla-firefox 5 times, gnome-terminal 3 times, etc... There is only one instance launched in X by the way. I don't have a ton of different windows open.

Is this normal or is something funky on my box?

No, that's perfectly normal ... mozilla.org products
spawn a few processes.

Cheers,
