Question Quick ALSA question

This may be a silly question but......

Just over the past couple of days I've begun haveing mysterious sound problems that I can't locate error logs for. Anytime I use any desktop other than KDE I lose sound. KDE works great, ET, CD's, UT2K4 etc. etc. But no joy with anything else.

I've been thinking about updateing ALSA anyway. Its a stock Slack 10 install with the exception of the 2.6.6 kernel. My questions are:

Do I install ALSA and leave the kernel alone (already configured for ALSA)?
Do I install EVERYTHING from the ALSA site?
Do I do a new kernel and forget ALSA?

I've never jacked with ALSA or anything really sound related outside of permissions.

Thanks for any help/advise.

hi there,

this happens cause everything concerning sound in KDE is managed by artsd - the sound server daemon of KDE.
when you tried something else, did you run alsaconf? after that alsamixer?
i think should work. if this is your issue, no reason to play with the kernel.
