questions about packages

Since i installed slackware 10.0, i've been having lots of problems with alsa, but, im not sure if the 2.4.26 kernel has alsa built into it, or its a seperate package.

sound on an ibm thinkpad 600 is like a dream or something...

still, my main questions is "is alsa built into the kernel, how do i know that?"

How about some more detail on the "problems"?

On Slack 10 it comes as an extra package, the alsa-driver package, which provides the driver modules and script which loads them (rc.alsa, in /etc/rc.d).

In general your /boot/config file will tell you about the state of your kernel.

Good luck

What "debug thing" ?
Does it give an error message? If so quote it!!
What exactly is the nature of your problem?
What is your sound card?
Which alsa packages do you have installed?
Help us to help you!!

It might be an already discussed issue about bad optimization switch for KDE multimedia package. Some ppl had problems playing OGG and MP3 files in KDE 3.2.3 (the one that came with Slack10)

There was a recompiled package of kde-multimedia. Search the slack forum.

Alternatively, upgrade the KDE (about 40Meg of downloads), or, better, Slackware (~200Meg 10.0 to 10.1 with "slapt-get --dist-upgrade").

nah, the distro is fine. i guess the real problem is my sound chip. the ibm thinkpad 600 is a pain to get sound on with linux, im gonna have to investigate further, this job requires me to get to the chip's architecture and find out its irq's and dma's.... bla bla bla

anyways, thanx a lot guys, i understand slack a lot better now.
