K. imsure its something stupid........ BUT when i use startx i get this (screen shot):

Hello there,
I shall only say that, you can't expect to startx on putty
get a X11 client for Windows

Putty can forward X, but only if you are running an X server. Use Cygwin/X (the X server in Cygwin) or Xming (the same X server but without Cygwin).

I will also add, you should never ever be running X as root, X forwarding or not.
