question about network manager autoconnect and resume

Hello,

So I was having a problem with network manager's auto-connect feature. When on my home network I had no problem with autoconnect. At other locations however, even with the autoconnect box checked in the configuration I always had to manually connect after resuming. I discovered that to make it work I needed to also check the box "All users may connect to this network", and indeed it had been checked for my home network.

My question is just why is this necessary? I am the only user on this laptop. Is there some other system user that does the connecting after a resume? Or because root does the initial connection on boot and I need to explicitly allow my own user?

All is working, I'm just curious.

Thanks,
Brian

AFAIU, this arises because of the difference in the way the authentication credentials are stored. "All users may connect to this network" implies a "system connection" where the authentication credentials are stored in the connection profile (within the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ directory), while user-specific connections may have there secretes stored in a keyring (eg kwallet), although it is possible to have NM store them the secrets in the connection profile if desired. Long story short, I usually set my connections up with "All users may connect to this network".
