Pulseaudio + Slackware64-current

Well, I'm loving Slackware. New favourite distribution. But I can't seem to get Pulseaudio to work, and I need it. I have compiled it and installed it but at boot I am still using ALSA :/

Please help me! This is really annoying!

If you are new to Slackware, better stay with -stable (14.1 at the moment).
Where did you install PulseAudio from?
Just out of curiosity, what do you need it for?

I compiled it from slackbuilds.org, using sbopkg. And I need Pulseaudio for Steam.

Steam works fine without it, if you install AlienBobs package:

Like schmatzler said.

Also read the README.Slackware in the package's build directory for the requirements:
Code:

Slackware package for Valve's Steam Client for Linux.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Steam client is primarily targeting Ubuntu, so in order to make it work
on Slackware, the package ships with a slightly modified steam startup script.

You will also have to install the following dependencies:
  - OpenAL
  - flashplayer-plugin
These are both available as SlackBuild scripts on http://slackbuilds.org ;
OpenAL and flashplayer-plugin packages can be found in my own repository
at http://slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/ too.

Note that the Steam client currently is 32-bit only. If you are running a
64-bit Slackware you must add multilib capability to it first.
Then, you need to add several more 'compat32' packages. In addition to
'compat32' versions of the aforementioned dependencies (OpenAL and
flashplayer-plugin), it is recommended that you also install a 'compat32'
package for oxygen-gtk2 .

The Steam client is dynamically linked against pulseaudio libraries, but my
modification to the steam startup script will actually force it to use
Slackware's ALSA for audio output. Pulseaudio will not be used.

In order to run the Steam client you will probably need a Nvidia or Ati card
with proprietary drivers. I would like to hear from people who are able to
start Steam and play a game using open source drivers.

Thanks for Steam, but knowing me, I have already met another problem. Mumble won't detect my microphone with ALSA. Also, in the list of choices in the Mumble client, OSS is listen, although not installed.

Slackbuilds for 14.1 are for 14.1. They are not guaranteed to work on -current.
There may just be a problem with your Mumble build.

Yes, it works, but you can't use built-in voice chat AND game sounds at once with ALSA. Or steam and external voice chat program. So Pulseaudio is only reasonable choice for multiplayer games.

By the way, it works fine on 64bit current.

That's not exactly true. Depending on your soundcard you may have to configure ALSA to use dmixer for the audio routing (example), but it can work.

There is no excuse for depending on pulseaudio. :hattip:

Well, if you have proper soundcard, this could work. Unfortunately I have ALC887-VD chipset and ALSA won't detect microphone at all. I'm afraid I'll have to keep pulseaudio (or buy standalone soundcard), although I'd gladly ditch it anytime I find viable solution.

You know yenn Everything in this thread has been solved as far back as SLK14.0 tad bit of search. please take time and look at your sound card problem.

You could try OSSv4 from Slackbuilds.org as an alternative to ALSA if Steam has issues. OSSv4 does have an ALSA emulation mode and should work flawlessly with some hardware. The only issue I know of offhand OSSv4 has is with some USB microphones due to the lack of a proper audio stack with them.
