Programs are not using my printer (even though test page in cups works)
ok, i have a psc 2110xi hp printer, and it has a perfect working status
downloaded the hpijs driver 1.5, installed, started cups, configured printer, great, test page is fine
now when i use openoffice or any other program (have tried eye of gnome as well) i click print and nothing happens; in open office, i select the print command from the menu, and it only has an option for a generic printer
i know that cups is running and that it is able to access my printer, but why not other programs?
I don't have an answer on how to do it in O.O. (I tried, but got stuck/stopped) but I did think of a work around. Print it pdf, then open it as pdf and print it there.
Hope this helps, and let me know if you get through the O.O. printer set up.
I had the same thing happen - the test page would print but when I used Mozilla or other applications, nothing happened.
I looked in /var/log/packages/cups-1.19etcetc and noticed that the print commands (at least in this version of cups) aren't lp or lpr, but lp-cups and lpr-cups. Mozilla and other applications used "lp" by default. When I substituted "lp-cups", the pages printed just fine - I would try this and see if this solves things.
Uninstall LPRNG using pkgtool and reinstall cups. This will fix all the links. What is happening to you is that LPRNG and CUPS are running at the same time, but all the lp commands are linked into LPRNG
yes, i found it strange that lp-cups worked for everything so i was beginning to think there was a conflict
then it was pointed out that lprng was conflicting, so uninstalled that, then recompiled cups from source (and noticed that it was changing all sorts of symbolic links) so now it works great
thx, just one step closer to full-time linux-using (the only major problem now is getting online with aol (and peng does not work) or to change aol, but that may not happen anytime soon)
*edit: all gnome progs are now using the printer, though kde has always used it without the reinstall, just a note (guess kde has full integration directly with cups and every other print service, gnome (which i use normally) is dependent on sym links)
also, open office now sees my printer, so all is good
