Running "alsamixer" and "F6" shows me I have "HDA ATI SB" and "Xonar D2X", Xonar D2X is my sound card and HDA ATI SB is most likely my motherboard sound. I can select Xonar D2X and exit but the same configuration remains.

Running "alsaconf" I get 1 option for "hda-intel", 3 options for "hifier", 12 options for "oxygen", 11 options for "virtuoso" & 1 option for legacy. I have gone through all the options yet I still have no sound, am I missing something here?

So you have 2 different audio cards. Most likely the default card is the built-in one and that's the one that it is using to output sound on. If you are not using the on-board one, the easiest and cleanest solution is to disable it in the BIOS options.

Another option is here:

this way you set the default card.

Your Xonar D2X uses the alsa snd-virtuoso driver. http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...ix:Vendor-Asus

Oxygen: C-Media CMI8788 http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...:Module-oxygen

hda-intel and hifier are probably part of your motherboard sound.

If you are not using the motherboard sound, its a good idea to disable it in the BIOS; or you can blacklist the extra modules in "/etc/modprobe.d". That way autodetection and setup is simpler. INstalling multiple sounds cards is tricky but not too difficult (see H_TeXMeX_H post and alsa web site_.

Use "aplay -L" to see the sound channels available. Then pick one to play back (speaker-test) and test each jack. For example:
Code:
$ aplay -L
null
    Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
front:CARD=Audigy,DEV=0
    SB Audigy 1 [SB0090], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    Front speakers
rear:CARD=Audigy,DEV=0
    SB Audigy 1 [SB0090], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    Rear speakers
center_lfe:CARD=Audigy,DEV=0
    SB Audigy 1 [SB0090], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    Center and Subwoofer speakers
surround40:CARD=Audigy,DEV=0
    SB Audigy 1 [SB0090], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=Audigy,DEV=0
    SB Audigy 1 [SB0090], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=Audigy,DEV=0
    SB Audigy 1 [SB0090], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=Audigy,DEV=0
    SB Audigy 1 [SB0090], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
iec958:CARD=Audigy,DEV=0
    SB Audigy 1 [SB0090], ADC Capture/Standard PCM Playback
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
then
Code:
$ speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -twav

speaker-test 1.0.24.2

Playback device is plug:front
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 16384
Period size range from 16 to 16384
Using max buffer size 16384
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 4096
was set buffer_size = 16384
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
(I only have speakers plugged into the front jacks of my card. "speaker-test -Dplug:surround40 -c4 -twav" gives silence for the rear channels)

Problem now seems to be fixed, I've taken the easy option by disabling the sound in the bios and everytime I boot my system the sound is working.

Thank you all.
