Procmail replacement?

I've used procmail as a local delivery agent (LDA) since 1997. Within the past few weeks messages from one mail list were put in my alpine inbox rather than the mbox file where they belong (and used to be delivered.)

I've changed the recipe's regex expression and put that recipe at the top of the list, all to no avail.

Yesterday I learned that procmail stopped being maintained a long time ago and it was suggested that I use fdm. SBo has a package for that but I have a couple of issues with it. First, I don't need to fetch mail since I run postfix here on the server/workstation (stopped using fetchmail when I started using postfix.) Second, the only information I find on configuring a ~/.fdm.conf is on the arch linux web site and doesn't explain enough for me to translate from their example to my needs.

Are there procmail alternatives for Slackware other than fdm?

TIA,

Rich

Just to play devil's advocate here, does it really matter that procmail is no longer maintained? Some rare pieces of software hit a state where they are simply complete and I feel that procmail is one of those rare few. As long as there are no security or stability issues with it, I don't see a problem with it being unmaintained at this juncture. I think it's still in wide enough usage that CVEs would be reported as they come up.

This thread reminded me how things have changed. It's a long time since I ran procmail.

Do some research, as I did. On the slackbuilds site, you should find a link to the fdm site. On that, there's a MANUAL, issue #48. Fdm accepts stdin, which I'm pretty sure procmail can deliver to. The MANUAL looks full of interesting stuff (to prospective fdm users). I'm disturbed by the age of some of it, but I'll bet it's not as old as procmail.

I have no desire to change just to change. I think that now I have a working regex for this one mail list. Since procmail's worked here for a long time as long as I can get it to do its job when mail lists make changes that alter how procmail sees the incoming messages I'm happy.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Rich

If I understand your suggestion of adding fdm as an additional layer between procmail and alpine I don't understand how that would fix the problem. In any case, it looks like I finally hit on a regex and position in the recipe list that is working. I'll keep fdm in mind for the future.

Many thanks,

Rich

Glad you're sorted.

I tried suggesting fdm AS a procmail replacement. I thought fdm had a similar enough function, and will accept mail on stdin from postfix, so it would be postfix --> fdm. Sorry if I was unclear.

You're on the right track. fdm is the best, stick with it, it's not so hard. There is a nice manual available:
