Problems with sound

Hi, i have strange problem with sound. For example i have programs amarok, xmms, quake3. With program amarok everything always is ok, but with xmms and quake3 sometimes are problems.
The problem is that sometimes when i run xmms and quake3 where is no sound at all. When i run whose programs from second or third time the sound is back.

PC: Slackware 10.2, mother board intel with integrated sound card(845 architecture).

what can i do?

In the cases that there is no sound, are you already running another application that uses the sound device? (e.g. Starting amarok and then simultaneously running xmms)

For example i run just xmms and the sound is gone, i turn it off and then run amarok. With amarok, with sound everything is ok. And when i turn off amarok and run xmms, and sometimes the sound is back with xmms.

xmms might stop because some program takes its output channel. you need to configure different output channels for each sound using program if you want to listen sounds from different programs at same time.

Unless your sound card supports mixing from numerous sources. Most newer cards do. Or you could use a sound daemon like arts or esound that does software mixing. I found this to lag a bit tho.
