problems with permissions

I`ve got another disk (fat32) in my computer and I wanted to download new mozilla`s installer onto it but I ddin`t have the write permission. So I logged in as root and tried to change the permissions. I have this disk in . folder (it was auto done during isntallation, so I`ve no idea how it`s done). I wasn`t able to find it with ls, but I did see it in mc. I`ve tried to change mode in mc, but it just doesn`t change it...
Secondly, I`ve made a folder there (as root), and then when I tried to copy something into that folder, the folder could not be seen from conquesror (I believe that`s what works similarly to windows exploration?) though I could see it under mc... I`ve tried to show hidden files, but it didn`t help.

What can be the cause, what am I doing wrong? Bare in mind that I`m a total newbie...

Secondly what program does pack files into tar.gz?

You have to edit /etc/fstab:
Code:
/dev/<windows drive> /path/to/mountpoint vfat umask=000,users,owner,rw,uid=<the user id you want to be able to write as>,gid=<the group id you want to write with> 0 0
You can find the UID and GID from /etc/passwd.

FAT filesystems don't have permissions at all.

Use tar and gzip in terminal.
File Roller - Gnome.
Ark - KDE.
