yes, just change your lilo.conf or menu.lst if you use grub as Protex has advised, then rerun lilo and reboot.
you've probably forgotten to add all the necessary framebuffer stuff to your kernel. if you want framebuffer support, i think you'll have to recompile it.
actually, I've noticed this to be a problem with every 2.6.x kernel i've compiled and i'm sure i have the proper framebuffer support in there. Its really strange, something is mucked up there.
i tried compiling 2.6.1 about four times, each time choosing the same options (i THINK) and getting different errors (the black screen a couple of times, then one with shifting coloured dots swooshing across the screen) then the last time it worked fine. ;o)
i did notice it works better if you don't copy your old .config to the new tree as a base.
anyway, the fairies came and fixed it this last time, so i'm content ;o)
