problems with libbfd and binutils

Hi all,

Slack 10.2, complete install on standard intel kit.

I came across a problem when trying to compile nagios-plugins (any version), and recieved an error message about libbfd.

I've read around and tested a number of other prgrams, and have even tried to recompile binutils (in which libbfd is a component) from source, using both the latest versions and the standard 10.2 release version and I keep getting the following message when compiling anything that requires libbfd.

symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libbfd-2.15.92.0.2.so: undefined symbol: _bfd_construct_extended_nqme_table

The compilation always immediately exists at this point.

Any help appreciated,

Cheers,
x-c

I took a look in my system (Not slack however):
strings libbfd-2.16.91.0.2.so | grep _bfd_construct
_bfd_construct_extended_name_table
