problems with kppp


hi i recently have installed slack 10.1 i have hardware modem from some unknown firm it's external modem.
i can't configure kppp. when i logon as a root and check query modem it says modem is ready. but when i click on dial it just minimize it somwhere (not to tray) and i have to kill it by kill -9.
i have entered the username and password and number to dial.
also i want to know i have heard that 9.1 slack is the best distro, what do you think guys ??
and i have question how the hell am i going to install opera on my slack i have found the redme file but i didn't understand a damn thing, if there is someone that has opera 8.0 on linux please help me.
that's all for now any kind of help is usefull.
also where can i download application for slackware is there link or should i use goole?

That is why you should not logon as root. You need to create a normal user account and use it as your main account. Never run X as root.

I think that I had a similar problem. I could query my modem. But then it wouldn't dial. The same thing happened when I set it up under pppsetup. Does anyone have any ideas? Right now, it is a PCI modem (intel chipset) in my only PCI slot. That would make it ttys0, I think. Is there any way to match its address under lspci or scanpci with its /dev/device name?

I downloaded an intel driver, from intel's site. It is a 536EP modem. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. How do I install the driver and get it to work?

All I had to do was install the driver for the modem, which I got from Intel's site. But still, how do I tell if this is a winmodem (now a linmodem)? Or just a modem?
