Problems with ALSA

Hey everyone. I recently tried to get ALSA working. I used alsaconf to configure it, selected my card ( emu10k1 ) everything seemed to go fine. Then it said it was going to play a test sound. Well.. Now i get a never-ending annoying high pitched noise coming out of my speakers non stop. Anyone know how to go about fixing this?
Also.. ALSA must not be working because xmms wont even let me open an mp3.

Try lowering the PCM bar.
