Unhappy Problems using TightVNC in Slackware

Hey guys,

I did a quick search, and couldn't find anything specific enough to the problem I've been having. I've been using RedHat linux for several years now, and I've used TightVNC to do remote desktop work in GNOME. I haven't upgraded for years, and just recently I got a new machine and decided to go with Slackware.

I just downloaded Slackware (11/15/2005) and now I'm having all sorts of problems. The gui that Slackware seems to have defaulted to is KDE, which is fine, but I can't get TightVNC working with it. I've gotten it working with other flavors of linux, but in Slackware it says the following:

Couldn't start Xvnc; trying default font path.
Please set correct fontPath in the vncserver script.

I checked the perl script that I have in /usr/local/bin, called vncserver. It says

unix/:7100 where the font is supposed to be set?!

Anyway, I tried various setting likes /usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi, and it's still not working. I have no idea why Slackware doesn't seem to like Tightvnc, and I was hoping maybe someone on here has a solution or an alternative for me to remote desktop from a WinXP machine to my Linux box.

Thanks in advance,

Tony

I use realvnc which works nicely on Slackware. Just download the binary release over at RealVNC: http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/download.html

There is also a Slackware package for tightvnc at linuxpackages.net if you're more comfortable with that, but I never tried that.

Alright thanks. I'm actually at work now, so I just SSH'ed into my machine at home. I unremarked the suggestions for font directory and color, and now TightVNC is not showing errors. I'm still not getting in though, but it might be a problem with some sort of IP blocking.

I'll try out those links though, they sound like they may be useful.

UPDATE:

TightVNC is working fine now. It turns out that I had the viewer on my windows machine defaulting to display 0, I set it so now it goes to 1 and it works fine now.
